USPS says "delivered"
I think I know the answer here but here goes anyway: USPS tracking says delivered. Customer says never got it. I opened a USPS service request. USPS says I have to wait 7 days before contacting them while they investigate. USPS says the package arrived on their tractor trailer truck at 7 am and the tracking says delivered at 830 am at the customer mailbox. USPS says that’s impossible because there is a ton of sorting and handling between trailer truck and mail carrier so they will speak to the carrier (and the customer) (?) and get back to me in 7 days. i told buyer i am asking usps to investigate and customer gets angry and says “i want to know what’s going on!”. well, so do i, obviously, but i ask him to wait another day and see if it shows. end of next day he says it never came. so i refunded his $ so he wouldn’t complain and ruin my star rating which is already crappy because of 2 nutjobs. the package was insured so at the 7 day point i will put in a claim to usps. unless they say they delivered it and customer is untruthful. did i handle this wrong? I really didn’t want to fight with him. but the book was worth $100.00 so i am kind of irritated. any constructive advice ? (i can furnish my own sarcasm).

USPS will scan in packages as delivered, that are actually not delivered until the next day. I have seen this multiple times. If the package will be delivered late, you need to offer the customer a return for a full refund NOW. They don’t want to be told you are checking it out. Ask them to wait ONE day at best, as packages get scanned in delivered before they are, especially when a mail man could not finish his route…

Generally USPS will pay insurance for a lost package but not if it was delivered.
Packages sometimes get stolen in Dec (and other times) so using amazon shipping or signature tracking is recommended.

You have been selling for a few years. If you used Amazon’s Buy Shipping and the tracking proves that you shipped on time you should have been covered.
But you have already issued a refund.
What? USPS states some odd thing and then states they will investigate? Not sure who you are speaking with. What does the tracking show?
None this really matters. I would guess that you shipped a book media mail or BPM. Neither carriers any insurance.

Complete waste of time to talk with USPS about this. if the tracking shows it was delivered then in their eyes they did their job, there is nothing to investigate. they are just blowing smoke saying they will and hoping for one of three things;
- You give up and they don’t hear from you again
2)A neighbor gives the buyer their package that was misdelivered to them
3)The package is delivered the next day because USPS is constantly lying about when their items are delivered so they are not penalized for late deliveries. I know they do this for a fact.
Bottom line? Buy your shipping from Amazon and ship on time following policy and you will be covered for all INR’s. When the customer contacts you about an INR send them this template letter:
You are eligible to request a refund under the A-to-z Guarantee if “You have not received your package and three days have passed since the maximum estimated delivery date or the tracking shows a delivery confirmation, whichever is sooner. Note: Amazon also requires you to wait 48 hours after contacting the seller before you are eligible to request a refund.”
To request a refund on an eligible order:
Go to Your Orders
Locate your order in the list and click Problem with order
Select “Package didn’t arrive” from the list
Select Request refund
Enter your comment in the text box.
Select Submit
Note: Refund requests can take a few days to investigate. Amazon will notify you of their decision via the email address associated with your account. To view the status of your request, locate your order in the list on the Your Orders page and select Problem with order.
To receive the maximum refund allowed you need to select “Package didn’t arrive”

Thanks everyone. I know media mail is not insured. I bought insurance. whoever said get signature confirm was correct. I’ve done that in the past for expensive items. That was my big boo boo. I only made the guy wait 1 day and yes I did issue the refund without asking him to return the book first as he was going ballistic. So that’s that. Live and learn. I’m still going to the post office as that’s the part of this I like because I have a really good crew there and it’s enjoyable. This random customer got an early Xmas present and I learned to always get the sign confirm. Still human and not ready for shipping by Amazon yet.
