I have found that manual targeting is the only thing that gets sales for me. Auto targeting gets some clicks, and maybe I'm just bad at my job, but they don't convert.

While, I can't speak to whether or not manual is better than auto targeting, I can share a couple of resources that I think might be helpful when looking for new ways to optimize your targeting.
The first is this webinar on the Ads Learning Console that focuses on manual campaigns and the different targeting strategies to consider. I would also check out this guide that goes in to not just manual targeting, but also strategies for negative targeting.
