Basics of Bills of Lading

A valid bill of lading (BOL) is essential for a smooth delivery to Amazon fulfillment centers. For every Less Than Truckload (LTL) or Full Truckload (FTL) shipment, providing a valid Bill of Lading (BOL) to the carrier is required. This document enables the carrier to schedule a delivery appointment. Please note that shipments with non-compliant BOLs will be refused upon delivery.

For Amazon-partnered LTL or FTL shipments, a BOL is automatically generated on the morning of the pickup date. You can access this document in the "Track shipment" tab of the Shipment summary. Additionally, a blank BOL template for partnered carrier shipments is available for download.

BOL Guidelines:

Use a standard BOL template when possible. This ensures easy identification and timely receipt of your shipment. If your carrier doesn't provide a template, be sure your BOL includes:

  • All Amazon reference IDs and shipment IDs contained in the shipment (found in the Summary of the Shipment creation workflow)
  • Seller name/Legal name of the seller
  • From address (street, city, state, ZIP code)
  • Carrier name and standard carrier alpha code (SCAC)
  • Carrier's shippers reference number (PRO#)
  • Handling unit quantity information (pallet, box, each)
  • Trailer and seal number (truckload shipments only)
  • "Shipper load and count" or "SLC" if the trailer is loaded, locked, and sealed without enabling the driver to count or inspect the shipment contents
  • Freight charge terms

Pro Tip: Include the BOL number on your shipping container or pallet label to facilitate quick freight verification upon delivery to the Amazon fulfillment center.

By following these guidelines, you'll help ensure a smooth and efficient delivery process for your shipments to Amazon fulfillment centers and you will be prepared should you need to reconcile your shipment later.
