Order Lost By USPS, Any Way For Me To Refund Customer Myself Without A To Z Claim And Still Be Reimbursed?

So I have an order that was clearly lost by USPS. I used Amazon Buy shipping, so should be covered for being reimbursed because of this.

However I'm not seeing a way I can refund the customer without them filing an A To Z claim first, and then me filing to be reimbursed. Is there a way for me to issue a regular refund with no A To Z, and then file to be reimbursed? The help pages aren't clear on this. I'd just feel better not having them file a claim first to avoid it, especially since your customer service denies claims when it shouldn't all the time. I feel like it's a risk of having an extra claim, not being reimbursed, so I end up worse off that if I just ate the cost of the refund myself and didn't even try to use the "perk" we're supposed to get of being reimbursed...

But it seems like the system is poorly thought out and this step is needed? Let me know if there's a way to do a refund and then be reimbursed without a claim! Thanks!

No, if you refund the order yourself, you will not get reimbursed.

But if you bought your shipping through Amazon, and have scans showing that you shipped on time, the customer should file the A-Z for "Item Not Received", and Amazon will refund the customer, but not deduct the amount from your balance (at least, that is the stated policy).

So if it all goes correctly, you don't have any additional work. I know some people have had cases where it didn't work right; I've never had any problems in 9 years.

ETA: having the customer file A-Z not only protects you (since you don't have to pay), it protects ALL Amazon sellers, as repeated claims help weed out the scammers. If you refund without them filing, they don't show up on Amazon's radar.

In order for Claims protections to be upheld, the customer needs to file an A-to-Z Claim specifying that they have had an issue with delivery. The following types of A-to-z Guarantee Claims impact your ODR:

  • Claims that are granted to the buyer and for which, Amazon determines that you were at fault
  • Claims for which you refunded the buyer after the claim was filed
  • Claims for which you or Amazon canceled the order
  • Claims that are pending a decision on appeal

Are you seeing claims affect your ODR when they are initially filed and before any decision is issued?
