Booksellers: What would you like to see in the forums?

It’s been over 25 years since Amazon was exclusively a bookstore, but books and booksellers remain a huge part of Amazon. That's especially true here in the forums, where there were more than 500 different "Book" focused threads in 2023 alone.

In this thread we'd like to hear from our bookseller partners and find out what you are most looking for in the forums.

  • Would you benefit from discussions exclusive to booksellers?
  • What would you most like to learn from other booksellers?
  • What questions would you most like us to pass on to our Books partner team?
  • What information would be most beneficial in helping you grow your business?

Okay, I'll take this one. How about

"When are you going to stop deactivating books because we are selling at the price the market is willing to pay, even though that's higher than the cover price when the book was last published 50 years ago?"

If that's too long; "When will you let us run our business properly?"

It's absurd that a book was selling in various places on the net, INCLUDING AMAZON, for $25-30, selling multiple copies per week; then suddenly Amazon decided that we can't price it higher than (IIRC) $7.95. Yet things like this happen all the time. Many books now show "Not currently available..." because no booksellers are willing to take a loss on a valuable book in order to get past Amazon's mindless pricing bots.

Absolutely .. yes I would love a forum exclusive to 3P booksellers. Time is precious and not having to wade thru tons of other posts by sellers other than 3P booksellers would be very much appreciated.

What would you most like to learn from other booksellers?

Always willing to learn, but mostly just enjoy reading what other 3P booksellers have to share or vent about.

What questions would you most like us to pass on to our Books partner team?

Let me count the ways .. first please stop making it harder for buyers to locate books .. The last version had some logic to it .. buyers at a glance could see (stacked) if a title had new .. used or collectible versions and could could easily (see) and click on desired item condition .. now it's a god awful mess where not only doesn't the condition show .. a buyer clicks on item (they think) is the one they want and then gets a subset of 3 to 5 additional items to choose from (2 paperbacks .. 2 mass markets .. hardcover) with zero way to know what is what .. all editions/versions (larger .. true large .. reprints out of print yada yada) got lumped into this mess .. second please stop allowing non related entities with zero correlation to have the ability to "gate" books .. the example I've used for two months now .. is the "branded" entity Silhouette America (due to sharing the name Silhouette) having all Silhouette titles (Romanc/Special Edition/Intimate Moments/Debut Authors et al) be unable to be listed or worse if previously listed pre December 2023 .. be unable to be edited .. it's an absurdity that is easily rectified .. no company that is unrelated to another company should have that power here .. third make it easier for a 3P bookseller's repeat buyers to source a seller's inventory .. again this is where another site has it all over this one .. to be clear after years of being on the individual plan (because I am usually only active for about half the year) .. I went to the Professional plan for one reason only .. to have what Amazon refers to as a "storefront" (because repeat customers would request this info from me which would then have me mail them printed out inventory by various authors) .. the other site charges me nothing and shows my exclusive inventory at one click .. fourth consider allowing deactivation (on vacation) to show a time frame if set for 2 weeks or less .. this allows (specifically) repeat buyers to source a trusted seller's items versus removing entire inventory in one fell swoop .. lastly (for the moment) making it easier for 3P booksellers to fix (clearly) inaccurate details pages/pictures .. I always take the time to upload pictures where there are none and where they are incorrect .. it is no longer worth my time to fight the bots (who deem) a correct cover as not being "correct" .. which happens about 50% of the time
