Reese's Law and Button Batteries - Update Thread
We're past most of the implementation dates for this, which varied (for reasons unknown) by SKU.
I am advising a Chinese manufacturer on compliance with this. Some manufacturers who want their products listed on Amazon will comply, others will not. The test requires $800-$1000 and takes several weeks. Amazon itself is now backlogged in approvals, and most sellers are receiving automated rejections. Meanwhile, Amazon has NOT delisted items that are shipped and sold by Amazon (even identical branded items of 3P sellers whose listings have been removed)
No other market places are requiring this at this time. Amazon has removed hundreds of thousands of listings to date.
In summary, for coin and button batteries, Amazon is requiring :
- Proof of compliance with Underwriters Laboratories 4200A (UL4200A) from an ISO 17025-approved lab
- General Certificate of Conformity that lists compliance with UL4200A
- Images of the product battery compartment
- Images of all sides of the product packaging
- Compliance stickers (see attached)
From the sounds of it, Amazon compliance is overwhelmed (probably because they continue to add 2,000 SELLERS PER DAY.)

Amazon is also very inconsistent in what they approve and don't approve. Basically identical document sets are approved by one support person for one product and not approved by another support person for a nearly identical product. Even worse, when they don't approve your documents. THEY WON'T TELL YOU WHY!
So you just have to try to guess what they feel is missing, add that to the documents, resubmit, and then wait another week or more. I've had three rounds of rejections on one product (Case 15258203781), while nearly identical products and documents are approved first round by another support agent.
It feels like Amazon is experiencing a rare form of corporate insanity. There's nothing we useless sellers can do but wait for some random good luck or perhaps an intervention by Amazon shareholders.

Yeah, and all those sales are now going to Amazon's competitors.

As of last night, Amazon removed our best seller that has been on Amazon for several years. This is the beginning of the end of my selling on Amazon. The juice is no longer worth the squeeze.

We got our docs and decided not to send them to amazon. Amazon thinks it is better than any other platform. They are far from that. We don't get the BS from anywhere but here.
We would rather sell on other professional sites.
There is a difference between hassle and professional, Amazon!

The discriminatory implementation is the stuff attorneys dream about. In the category I sell in, Amazon has removed thousands of listings but left thousands of non-compliant listings live. It seems there are "preferred" accounts for which the standard is not being consistently implemented. Meanwhile, the product(s) they discontinued of mine are seeing some increases on other platforms as I reallocate attention elsewhere.

Though we sell books, nothing w/ button batteries, I honestly don't believe it's malice of the part of the employees. Ignorance is to blame!!
In all departments, AMZ's ESL employees are ill-trained. Give them an hour's instruction(if that), sit 'em down w/ an instruction book plus they're TIMED in their response. A "No" is quickest when don't have an idea what one's doing. Includes their supposedly "World Class" Seller Support team.
Occasionally get an American, working from home, who admits they don't have a clue. Can hear them flipping pages ; one told me there's an instruction for near every topic but the problem is locating/reading it within the given amount of time!!

Toys are excluded from this since battery testing is already mandated through ASTM F963 standards, yet I've had at least 30 mass market SKUs already pulled. Similarly, Amazon retail also sells these products, so I'm on the sidelines letting them figure it out as the documentation they're asking for is redundant and simply doesn't exist.

Greetings everyone,
We understand your concerns around the new button cell and coin battery policy. To ensure customer safety, the policy requires all products in the store to meet the latest safety standards. This decision prioritizes child safety by addressing risks associated with accessible batteries. To achieve this, Amazon is committed to maintaining consistent safety standards across all product offerings, and holding all consumer products containing button cell or coin batteries to the same standards. We recognize the challenges this may pose for the selling partners and appreciate your cooperation in adhering to these important safety measures. Please refer to our policy page for additional details: Help Page
Thank you for your understanding.

I have had the same issue with my products. I had the manufacturer send in the products to be tested and then sent the documents to Amazon, including the other pictures. Then, they stated that the product being tested was not my product. The manufacturer used the model numbers that initially came on the product, so I had to have the testing company add all of my model numbers. This has been so frustrating because you can not get a direct answer from anyone. I first sent in a DRAFT copy to make sure they would accept the document, but they just sent me back the CUT and Paste reply that they keep sending me. I don't like that nothing seems to be coming from the USA, it seems everything is being done in another country. What is going on at Amazon? Why can't we talk to someone? Why will no one reply in simple ENGLISH? I hate getting cookie-cutter answers that don't tell you how to fix what they want. Receiving replies takes a long time and I have products that will be sent back if they do not act soon. It is very funny that all of my Chinese competitors are still being shown, so what happens when they approve my listing again? How much will it cost me just to get back seven or eight years of building my products to the TOP of most keywords?
