Phone numbers with extension

After years of selling on Amazon (mostly FBA), I’ve recently noticed that all of my seller fulfilled orders now include phone numbers with extensions, which stood out to me as unusual as none of my previous orders had any phone number. When I called one of these numbers, a recorded message indicated it was part of an Amazon system. The message instructed me to enter the extension and the customer’s zip code.

I find this odd and am concerned about whether this might be some kind of scam. Alternatively, is this an method Amazon is using to protect customer phone numbers?

Can someone clarify what’s going on?

As a strictly FBM seller, those phone numbers have been on every order for several years now.

For years they left a warning in place that sellers are NOT ALLOWED to call that number. However, there is language somewhere in Help that declares the seller may use the number for the same reason as carrier -- in order to schedule delivery. You may not call for any reason other than scheduling a delivery.

And yes, those are temporary, made up numbers that are routed through Amazon. You are not seeing the buyer's actual phone number.

There are several threads on this topic from the last year or so that can be found on the right side of the page as needed, but echoing April's comments above for carrier use and routing commentary.
