Should I file/pay ST-1 Sales and Use Tax in Illinois???

Hello,

I am located in Illinois and wonder if I should pay the Sales and Use tax to the Illinois Department of Revenue.

I have downloaded the Illinois Custom Tax Report from Jan 1, 20xx, to Dec 31, 20xx, via Sales Tax Reports on Amazon, and by looking at it, I can tell that Amazon collected and withheld state sales taxes from my bi-monthly payout. It seems that Amazon withholds it and remits the taxes to the appropriate states, including Illinois, so I don’t have to. Is this correct

With the information above, do I need to pay any additional sales taxes to the state of Illinois via the ST-1 Sales and Use Tax return?

Please advise.

Thanks

Note: I do not live in Illinois; to this information is generic.

You are correct that Amazon collects and remits the sales tax; however, you likely still need to file a tax report on whatever schedule the state requires (I have to file quarterly). There is probably some entry of total sales, then another entry of what part of those sales do not have tax due; wording varies by state.

HOWEVER, I believe that Illinois has an addition tax that is NOT handled by Amazon; at least, there have been comments in the past. Hopefully someone who lives there can help, but if not, I would contact your state tax office, or a tax professional versed in sales tax (do NOT go to the pop-up Income Tax services that open in the strip malls this time of year; they are generally trained only in INCOME tax, and may not be able to help with sales tax questions).

Hi @Seller_9zy412ZaZSHcO,

Tatiana from Amazon here.

I cannot provide any advice or direction on taxes as we Community Managers are not tax professionals, but we do have an FAQ page on Marketplace Tax Collection for Illinois located here.

The link above does answer a few questions and provides links to a couple of Illinois Department of Revenue resource pages. However, to echo what @Seller_nRFmxiQg4EGrw said, I would advise seeking the help of a tax professional to ensure accurate filing.
