Trying to change awful placeholder book photo to ACTUAL photo
Amazon shows photos of books on the main product images page that are obviously just placeholders - just a rectangle with a certain color and the title at the top. I have the REAL cover and tried to change the image to the ACTUAL image of an ACTUAL cover and got this rude message and denial.
The MAIN image that you have submitted shows a product that is different than the product represented by the ASIN's existing MAIN image. To resolve this problem, remove or update your contribution's MAIN image so that it shows the correct product, or update your contribution's identifying information (e.g. UPC, ASIN) so that it corresponds to the product shown in your MAIN image.
This is laughable except it's just frustrating. Yes, I have photos on my product detail page but prospective sellers won't see them if they don't get past that awful non-photo photo!
BTW this has nothing to do with needing approval to sell. We have great metrics so 90% of the time we are automatically approved or have to watch the same video and answer the same questions that I'm pretty sure I've done 14 times now!
How do I fix this? I wrote Amazon but we all know THAT does no good. Got sent a link that sent me to a Dogs of Amazon cute little dog and a big "Sorry..." message.
Thanks,
Melissa

I wish you luck on this.
I've long had decent luck at submitting photos for when there was no image available, and done fairly well at replacing non-compliant images (such as the sideways photos of a book on a table; I use a pre-press quality scanner); but other than for a very short time when I could fix anything, I've had almost no luck at ever getting an "Cover Coming Soon" image replaced. I've given up trying, but admire those who are willing to keep up the good fight.
On the bright side, I'm not convinced that it makes a huge difference to the buyer, although genre could affect that greatly.

The ability we once had to open cases, supply proof and have book detail pages corrected has vanished.
Support no longer helps. They use templates to explain why they won't help.
So, unless it happens automatically, it doesn't happen.
Usually I have good luck replacing those ugly main images but not every time.
Make sure your image follows guidelines, most especially in regards to size. Mostly the book images are never replaced unless the main image is less than 500 pixels on longest side, or is that place-holder abomination.
I advise using a 1600 minimum pixel size for the image you upload to the Image tab for main image use. While Amazon still allows 500 in books, various Help files indicate a minimum of 1000, other Help files say 1600.
So, best just to go with that 1600 minimum.
I even had a return initiated because the book did not look like that generic image. And this is with the offer specific images I always use.
Sometimes I think people just like to be difficult. It was a Haynes motorcycle manual. I think the guy knew that no Haynes manual looks like a gray rectangle.
And finally, know that sometimes images take up to two days to populate.

Hi there @Seller_FOOm5gnLPoYRb,
I'm sorry you have had such a hard time improving the images associated with the books you are trying to list. In general Amazon Seller Support requires significant manufacturer's proof before making any changes. Because Seller Support would override other Seller's contributions the expectations are very strict. I'm sorry for the difficulties this creates.
However I would like to review your case to see what options I have available to escalate. Please reply with your most recent Seller Support Case ID on this ASIN and I will investigate further. Thank you for your understanding.
