Clarification on non-toy magnetic products

Hi all -- could someone clarify regarding non-toy magnet products? Magnets like those used on a magnetic whiteboard, calendars or for in/out type boards in classroom, offices, retail space etc.

Round disc magnet - 1" diameter. I know in the past any magnet (regardless of toy or not) under 1.5" diameter was not allowed but I'm seeing smaller ones available on Amazon now. Anyone certain these should be OK to list now based on this statement from Amazon Magnet policy that indicates these are not required to follow the "Magnet Policy"?

This policy does not include products that are used exclusively for educational, research, professional, commercial, or industrial purposes that are sold or distributed to school educators, researchers, professionals, or commercial or industrial users.

Again, these are not a toy product - they comply with all laws etc. and are used as noted above and marked for age 8+.

I hesitate to ask SS to clarify since that's typically not the best source of accuracy. Your help appreciated. Thank you.

Hi @Seller_9FTnJrSOjNXW1,

Thanks for posting your question. As mentioned in the Magnetic products page, ensure you get the testing that's required:

One of the following two options:

  • 16 CFR Part 1262 (Safety Standard for Magnets)
  • ASTM F963-23 or ASTM F963-17 Section 4.38 (Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Toy Safety)

You can follow the links at the bottom of the Magnetic products page that discuss toy safety. The items must have the testing that is required on that page as well the links to this help page, which will guide you to the CPSC website.

You can search for ASTM F963-23 for the requirements you need to have tested and it will tell you that for magnets, you must conform with 16 C.F.R. part 1501. If you search for that on the page it links to, it will provide you the testing dimensions. See this link for the dimensions. Be sure to look for yourself as well as you knows your product best and will be responsible for knowing the exact testing the product needs.

Regards,

- Manny
